Addicted To My Phone

  • Amy

How many times do you check your phone everyday? Would you guessed 20? It’s scary how many times one can check their phone. Apple released the figures stating an average iPhone user unlocks their phone 80 times a day in a 12 hour span. We are talking about 6-7 times an hour. That’s every 10 minutes or less. That is sad but true. You likely check your phone even without notifications for a message or email or text, you just check it for the sake of checking. If you get an alert, you’re compelled to check immediately. Think about all the hours wasted on checking.

What is the one item you can’t leave the house without other than your car keys to physically drive out? Your phone! Most people refuse to leave the house without their phone. As a matter of fact, my phone is on me or within arms reach 95 percent of the time. In reality maybe the percentage is closer to 99%. Many people phone charge their phone beside their and use it before the go to bed and first thing in the morning. If you don’t call that addiction, I’m not sure what is. Why is there a need to have this device so close to you? Women often say they feel naked without makeup, well i think the saying is you feel lost without your phone. Physically lost as too many people rely on the phone for maps, social media and and latest news.

How can you defeat this addiction? Try the out of sight out of mind trick. Instead of keeping your phone in your pocket or holding it in your hand try leaving it your bag or drawer somewhere further away. Better yet turn off all the non essential notifications, this trick will preserve your battery life too so it’s a win win situation. Don’t go to bed with your phone, do your surfing before you go bed and charge your phone in an outlet that is not next to your bed. Decrease it slowly so you don’t go into complete phone withdrawal syndrome. When you are out with friends urge everyone to put away their phones and actually socialize with each other instead.
